Chilifest 2008
The Fourth Annual Atlantic Highlands Front Porch Club Chilifest, held on October 4, 2008, raised $3,000 with all proceeds going to the AACC Food Pantry. The AACC Food Pantry is an ecumenical food pantry of Atlantic Highlands’ churches that helps over 200 families in the Bayshore region.

With nearly 300 attendees and 32 entrants for the chili cook-off competition, this year’s event was the Front Porch Club’s biggest Chilifest to date. Sam Grillo of Atlantic Highlands won this year’s first prize with his beef and pork chili. Prizes were also awarded to Sarah Chiles for best vegetarian chili, Dan Thurman for most exotic chili and Bill and Alex Iler for the people’s choice award.

The distinguished panel of judges included Atlantic Highlands Mayor Frederick J. Rast, Atlantic Highlands Councilman Louis Fligor, Chef Zeet Peabody, Pastry Chef and Owner of the Flaky Tart Marie Jackson, Head Atlantic Highlands Librarian Marilyn Scherfen and the 2007 Chilifest Champion, Richard Colangelo.

The event also included a charity auction, gifts for children and live music by Mike Burke, Joe Niederberger and Brent Findon as well as an open mic session for local musicians to entertain the crowd.

This year’s chair of the Chilifest planning committee, Charlotte Magee, praised the spirit of Chilifest. “Chilifest is always fun, but it had an extra-special feel this year. Entrants got really creative with their chili recipes and pulled out all the stops to bring home the trophy. Add live music and the Rockin’ Rum Bar, and people just had a blast! All for a great cause.”

The Front Porch Club is a forum for Atlantic Highland's residents to socialize with neighbors, interact with the community and discuss new ideas and issues. The Front Porch Club exists to improve the quality of life in Atlantic Highlands by bringing people together online and in person.
